CLUELESS star, mother and anti-vaxxer Alicia Silverstone has long been an active and outspoken vegan and advocate for living “eco-friendly”.
So while on holiday in Australia this week, the 39-year-old took time out of her trip to meet up with other “like-minded” followers of her blog and lifestyle while in Sydney’s Double Bay.
Her management contacted a small group of Aussie-based fans who followed Silverstone’s The Kind Lifeblog, and invited them to a meetup so she could connect “in person”.
“We are trying to organise a kind life meetup so Alicia can connect in person with you all,” the email read.
“We’d like to keep it low key so please refrain from spreading the word, but if you have a vegan friend who you think would be interested in meeting other veg heads or want to bring your kids, that’s totally fine!”
One of the guests, journalist and author Katrina Fox, was part of the 15-person group who met with the Hollywood star in person, and described the morning as “lovely” and “very exciting”.
“It was very generous and kind of her,” Fox told news.com.au.
“She’s on holiday and not working, so it was very kind of her to meet with her followers.”
Fox said the meet-up with Silverstone was only small, but that was a deliberate move. She said those who were followers of her work on “the kind world” and not as her work as a celebrity were invited.
“They didn’t want much mention over social media,” Fox said.
“She [Alicia] wanted it low key, and the majority of people who went were vegetarian or vegan and interested in her work, her books The Kind Mama and The Kind Life and her blog.”
Fox, who has been a vegan for 20 years and is not an anti-vaxxer, said while the gathering didn’t discuss vaccination there was “a lot of talk about children”.
“One woman was pregnant, so there was talk about kids,” she said.
The Clueless star, who rose to fame in the ‘90s, copped criticism in 2014 for her anti-vaccination statements she made in her book, The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning.
The mother-of-one became a parental expert after the birth of her son, Bear, by advising pregnant women to think of their uterus as a “baby house”, and to eliminate meat and dairy from their diet because it is “toxic sludge”.
She also referred to “anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was ‘never the same’ after receiving a vaccine”.
In her book, she also promised readers and followers of her lifestyle “an authoritative, one-stop guide that empowers women to trust their instincts” while warning against items like tampons, toothpaste and vaccines — describing them as essentially shots of “aluminium and formaldehyde”.
Silverstone praised her lifestyle as the reason her son had “never been sick-sick” because “his body is a super-clean, healthy machine, it can defend itself against and flush out all the nasty stuff much more quickly than a baby whose diet isn’t as kind.” She also said that he had never received a drop of medicine, which was another reason for his perfect health.
Fox said Silverstone brought Bear along to the meetup in Double Bay and the breakfast, which was held at Proteini in Darlinghurst, and described him as a “very nice young boy” who “had fun climbing trees and hanging out with people”.
“We talked about recommendations on where she [Alicia] should go, but there was no work or film talk. It was just normal conversations and very comfortable, because she’s not your regular kind of celebrity,” Fox said.
“She’s just another mum in the park, and happy to meet other people who are on a similar wavelength to her in creating a better world.”
Silverstone has been on holidays in Australia with her musician husband Chris Jarecki and their five-year-old son Bear Blu.
